Orthotics
Do I need orthotic shoe inserts?
Orthotics properly align your feet and ankles, which further aligns your knees, hips, and lower back. They can also alleviate issues associated with chronic conditions, including:
- Heel spurs
- Plantar fasciitis
- Ankle instability
- Achilles tendinitis
- Tarsal tunnel syndrome
- Foot and ankle arthritis
- Prior strain or sprain injuries
You might also need orthotic shoe inserts if you have diabetes. Custom orthotics are beneficial for lowering your risk of diabetic foot wounds caused by friction from your shoes. They’re also helpful for cushioning your feet to help wounds heal efficiently.
Which type of orthotics do I need?
Desoto Foot Care & Pedi-Spa provides more than one-size-fits-all shoe inserts that aren’t tailored to your unique needs.
Instead, your podiatrist thoroughly examines you and goes over your medical history to help design a custom set of orthotics. Some of the orthotics available include:
Accommodative orthotics
Accommodative orthotics are soft and cushioning. They’re strategically designed to take the pressure off of sore and tender spots while allowing current wounds to heal.
Functional orthotics
Functional orthotics are more rigid and are often made from plastic or carbon fiber. These types of orthotics control abnormal foot and ankle functions and ease aches and pains in your lower extremities, as well as your back.
Sports orthotics
If you participate in sporting events that require unique footwear, such as ice skating, you may benefit from specialized orthotics to provide extra support during your event. These personalized orthotics can prevent pain, blisters, and other issues related to sports and exercise.
How are orthotics made?
As a state-of-the-art podiatry practice, Desoto Foot Care & Pedi-Spa provides in-house orthotic molding. You need to be barefoot for the design process, but your podiatrist can generally design orthotics using a 3D computer modeling system. In some cases, traditional plaster molding is still necessary.
Whether you have digital or plaster molds, the next step involves sending your molds to the podiatric lab. The lab fabricates and carefully crafts your custom orthotics and sends them to you within a few weeks.
If you need custom orthotics, contact Desoto Foot Care & Pedi-Spa for an evaluation. You can book an appointment through the website or call the office directly to schedule.
